Why Museums Feel Reverent
Light as a director of attention
In short
Museums light the object and keep the room dim, so your attention narrows to what is lit.
Museums light objects at 50–200 lux while keeping the surrounding space deliberately dimmer. This produces a strong figure-ground relationship: the artwork is lit; the visitor is shadow.
The visual system responds by narrowing attention to the lit surface. Combined with low UV and IR output to protect the objects, the result is a contemplative environment that almost anyone recognizes — even before they understand why. It is one of the few intentionally designed light environments most people regularly encounter.
